The following text is from the original listed building designation:
ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 NW 7/58 No 48 with Low Range to Rear 23.8.74 GV II House and shop. Early C19 with later alterations, with a lower range to the rear that possibly incorporates earlier work. Stock brick; Kent tiled roofs. Front range containing principal rooms with rear wing; the low range beyond this may always have been semi-industrial. Front: 3 storeys with later attic; symmetrical 3-window range. Parapet conceals dormer from street; 1st floor windows recessed under round-headed arches with stucco capitals. 12-pane hornless sash windows to upper floors. 2 doors with fielded panels and rectangular overlight and C20 shop front between. Internal end stack to left. Rear wing, 3½ storeys, with a sash window with glazing bars to each floor; internal end stack. This wing appears to have been heightened. Low range with no side windows; scars of abutting buildings now removed. C20 window and modern doorways to end elevation.

An article in KentOnline suggested a Roman road had been found beneath the cellar of no 48. (2). However the 'road' seems to have been made of clay or chalk bricks, shows no sign of use and is completely different construiction from known Roman roads in the region which are generally of compacted gravel. It is more likely that the surface is of medieval or post-medieval date.
