Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 NW Nos 69 and 71 7/120 (Lloyds Bank) 24.10.50 GV II Bank, formerly substantial town house. C17, with mid C18 front, reorganised when converted to a bank in C20. Brown brick, rendered to ground floor; Kent tile roof. Main range runs parallel to street (ground floor arrangement altered in C20 when Cl7 stair moved to rear); 3 short wings (with hipped roofs) to rear. Front: 2 storeys; regular 6-window range. Parapet with stone coping; brick cornice band. All upper windows with rubbed brick flat arches and stone sills; hornless sashes, some original, in reveals, 6-pane to top half-storey, 12-pane to 1st floor. Ground floor carefully remodelled in C20 with 2 large tripartite sash windows with glazing bars and a cash-point with glazed overlight. Doorway to left with canopy on consols brackets. Some good interior features: some late Cl7 large fielded panels to ground floor; a more extensive series to 1st floor. Late Cl7 (circa 1700) open well stairs (not in situ), with 3 turned balusters to each stair (the centre one fluted) with elaborate newels and moulded rail. A rear room contains earlier Cl7 panelling (not in situ), each panel with a central painted motif set in a formal surround. The discovery of this painted panelling excited considerable interest, see Rev S W Wheatley, 'A House in Rochester High Street, Numbered 69 and 71', Archeologia Cantiana, XXXVIII (1926), 69-74.
