Full Description

Description from record TQ 87 NW 3:
[TQ 8233 7596] St. Peter & St. Paul's Church [T.U.] (1) St. Peter's Church, Stoke, is mainly late Norman and early Decorated. It has two aisles and a low unfinished tower. Much restored in 1898. (2) In normal use. (3) Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. Grade I. C12, C14, C15 early C16 restored C19. (For full description see list) (4) Additional bibliography. (5)

In 2009 a watching brief on test pits dug to investigate movement in the south aisle structure recorded the foundations to this part of the church and the presence of a large brick-built burial vault within the building, probably dating to the 17th-18th century. (7)

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is mentioned in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment for Stoke Parish, part of the wider Hoo Peninsula study. The report states that the church is grade 1 listed, and mainly dates from the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It was always towerless, and suffered bomb damage in 1944. In 2009, the church was in need of further repairs. (8)
