GILLINGHAM
TQ76NE LOWER RAINHAM ROAD, Grange 686-1/7/72 (North East side) 21/12/73 No.147 Peckham Lodge
GV II
House. Late C18, extended mid-late C19. Brick, rendered to front, brick lateral stacks and hipped slate roof. PLAN: double-depth with left-hand extension. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3-window range. Main house a right-hand 1-window range set forward with a round-arched doorway within a similar recess with mid C20 fanlight and 6-panel door, and a 3/3-pane sash above; 2-window right-hand return has segmental-arched 6/6-pane sashes. Rear has a wide full-height canted bay with rubbed brick flat arches to 6/6-pane sashes. Lower C19 left-hand 2-window section with 6/6-pane sashes. INTERIOR: entrance stair hall with a right-hand front dogleg stair with stick balusters and column newels, a left-hand passage to rear room, and large rear first-floor room with a marble fire surround. Front window has rising sash shutters. HISTORY: reported to have been built for the Commander of the estuary forts, over which the large rear first-floor room commands a view.
