TQ7669SW CENTRAL AVENUE, Pembroke 686-1/3/97 (East side) 06/06/84 Memorial to French prisoners of war approx 25m S of Church of St George
GV II
War memorial. 1869. Polychromatic limestone and red sandstone ashlar, granite and marble. Gothic Revival style. Stepped base to square plinth with inscribed sides and weathered top, aedicule above has polychrome round arch with pointed arched hood, within a steep gable with iron finials on foliate capitals and marble columns, and spirelet with limestone and granite bands to a finial. Inside is a figure of a Napoleonic sailor. HISTORY: commemorates French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars who died in prison hulks in Britain, especially those buried on St Mary's Island, part of the former Dockyard. Part of a complete early C20 naval barracks, with the Captain's House, Mess block, barracks (Pasley Rd) and ancillary buildings (qqv).
