(TQ 74486829 - O.S. 1:2500 1970) HIGH STREET South West Side II* No. 156 C18, 3 storeys with dormers and basement, 4 windows. Brick front with stone coping to parapet and good moulded brick cornice. Mansard with 2 dormers, one with original sashes in reveals over stone cills. Left hand door with fine wooden case, panelled reveals and fanlight over panelled door. Panelled entrance hall. Rear shows C17 part timber framed construction with boarded, plastered and brick surfaces. (1) HIGH STREET (EASTGATE) No. 156 Former town house, now offices. A C18 re-fronting and internal re-modelling of C17 building. brick front, Kent tile mansard roof; timber framed to rear, partly weather-boarded, rendered and brick clad. ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 (EASTGATE) 9/81 No 156 24.10.50 GV II* Former town house, now offices. A C18 re-fronting and internal re-modelling of a C17 building. Brick front, Kent tile mansard roof; timber-framed to rear, partly weatherboarded, rendered and brick clad. Double-depth plan; entrance hall and stair to left, but stairs originally contained in a rear turret. 3 storeys and attic. Front: regular 4-window range. 2 flat-roofed dormers, one with a sash, the other with a 2-light casement window. rebuilt parapet with stone coping. Moulded brick cornice. 12- pane hornless sashes in reveals under flat window arches, with stone sills, to all floors including the 2 to ground (where the reveals continue below sill level). Left-hand wooden doorcase with panelled reveals; panelled door with fanlight. Simpler doorway to right. Interior: considerable remains of C18 wall panelling, also internal shutters. Good lateral open oval well stair rises through all floors, wreathed rail and stick balusters. Some late C17 panelling to former framed stair turret.
