Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 SW 9/70 Nos 100 and 102, including stretch of walling to rear of No 102 GV II Formerly a pair of houses, now two shops. Possibly late C17 with substantial alterations and extensions. Timber-framed with brick infill; Kent tile roofs. Double-depth plan with stacks in the valley between the roofs that run parallel to the street; lateral stairs and 2 jettied gables to attic at rear. It is possible that each house had a detached kitchen, that to No 100 largely rebuilts in brick in the C19 and connected to the house by a narrow storeyed wing, that to No 102 marked by a short stretch of Cl7 brick walling that returns on the line of the rebuilt block to No 100. 3 storeys. Front: entirely re-faced in early C20 with mock timber framing and cement render. 4-window range; 2 light casements to 2nd floor, small canted oriels to 1st. Circa 1900 shop front to No 100, the fascia with fluted consoles; replica shopfront to No 102. Rear: attic gables, jettied and weatherboarded, each with one 3-light casement (renewed); shallow canted oriel to 1st floor of each house with 4:16:4 sashes. Attached by a storeyed wing to No 100, a square-plan brick building, possibly incorporating some framing, perhaps a detached kitchen (see above) but now appearing entirely C19; the fragment of C17 brickwork to the rear of No 102 (possibly the remains of a detached kitchen) is included in this listing. Interior: chamfered ceiling beams with scross stops to ground and 1st floor of both houses; lateral dog-leg stair to each, in situ, with turned newels (stick balusters to No 100). wall panelling to 1st floor of No 100 looks late.
