Full Description
The following text is from the original listed building designation:
ROCHESTER HIGH STREET TQ 7468 NW 7/59 King's Head Hotel (formerly listed 24.10.50 as No 58) GV II Hotel. C17 rear wing; C18 front range altered and re-faced in later C19; C19 rear ranges along Boley Hill. Part timber framed; mostly rendered brick; Kent tile and slate roof. Original plan too altered to reconstruct; lateral stairs in situ, with possibly C16 room to rear. Front: 3 storeyed regular 3-window range; moulded cornice; tripartite 6:24:6 and 4:16:4 pane hornless sash windows under depressed arches to upper floors. Prominent plat band with the hotel's name attached in large letters. Ground floor with Edwardian brown tiling and fenestration with cornice and fascia (bearing name and nature of business) that returns around curved corner and along Boley Hill elevation. Wide central entrance (the cornice here projecting and supporting iron brattishing) and 3-light windows with glazing bars. Boley Hill elevation preserves some of the C18 dentilled cornice; plat band returns. The rear ranges present varied frontages that reflect their different building dates: The older wing is jettied at 2nd floor level and the back block is top lit; generally 12 and 16 pane hornless sash windows, with some C20 casements to ground level. Interior: much late C20 joinery; open well stair extends through 3 storeys. Room at rear with large joists.
