ROCHESTER ST MARGARET'S STREET TQ 7468 SW 9/235 No 58 (The Gleanings) with railings to 19-2-70 rear (W). GV II* House. Circa 1830. Architect not known; the front is influenced by Soane and the combination of Grecian (towards the street) and Gothic (towards the river) is rminiscent of J B Rebecca. Buff- coloured stucco on gault brick (exposed on side elevations); Welsh slate hipped roof. Double-depth with central entrance hall and stair to rear. 2 storeys. Front: symmetrical, 3 bays, the centre bay projecting under a pediment. Side bays under parapet with cornice. 1st floor windows recessed in 2 layers under elliptical arches, with 12-pane hornless sashes in revealed frames. Plat band between floors. Ground floor of centre bay, and end pilasters, rusticated. Porch with Doric columns and simple moulded cornice; raised and fielded panel double doors with fixed side lights all under flat cord fanlight. Side windows under similar fanlight, recessed, with one 12-pane sash flanked by blind panels of equal size. Rear: 3 bays, crenellated; side bays project and are connected by string courses at cornice and 1st floor level the latter broken by a lower semi-circular storied projection, also crenellated. All windows with elliptical arches and hood moulds; tripartite sashes (3:6:3 hornless to 1st floor, 2:4:2 horned to ground) with fanlight to centre, and trefoil heads to side lights. Centre sashes (12 and 9 pane to 1st and ground floor) with intersecting Gothick head tracery. Sash windows and some blanks to side elevations. Left return connected to service range (qv). Interior: good contemporary fittings; open-well stair with iron stick balusters and wreathed rail, the well top lit by a glazed dome; panelled doors and reeded door surrounds; plaster cornices, and decorative panels to hall. Some chimney-pieces replaced. The rear central semi-circular projection originally contained water-closets fed from a lead cistern concealed behind the crenellation and itself fed by the lead guttering that collected rainwater from the hipped roofs. The cistern survives. The spear headed railings on ragstone plinth at the foot of the rear garden (to W) are included in this listing.
