During a 2018 evaluation 77m to the east of the smithy, a refuse deposit probably associated with the use of the smithy was identified. Ceramic building material and small to medium sized fragments of slag from metal working were recovered from the layer. The building material was dated to 1700-1900 AD providing an approximate date for the deposition of the refuse. An overlying deposit associated with a nearby lime kiln also contained metal working debris including hearth slag, suggesting extended use of the site as a refuse dump associated with the smithy. (1)
