In 2011 a dendrochronological analysis of the oak timbers at The Rock Inn was undertaken and eleven samples were tested from several places (joist, transverse beam, three posts, spine beam, head rail, bressumer, door post, northern and southern rafters). Seven of these samples came back as ranging between AD 1383 and AD 1519, forming a 137 year site chronology. Two were felled in winter AD 1519/20, with two samples probably felled within this date and four compatible felling-date ranges. Construction probably occurred AD 1520 or soon after. A large date range for the inglehook bressumer and further examination is recommended. The rafters involved in the hip to the gable at the east end were felled in winter of AD 1571/2, so the work likely occurred in 1572 or soon thereafter. The tree are likely from a local source. This is a three bay, two and a half-storey building is a lateral chimney house. (2)
