Summary

A small Roman bead rim jar with combed decoration; found in August 1971 on Nor Marsh. It appeared to have been washed out of an area to the north east known to have contained Roman burials. The grey ware jar had evidence of black burnishing and was dated to the mid first century AD.

Full Description

A small bead-rim jar with combed decoration was found in August 1971 by Mr. G Peters of Sittingbourne, on Nor Marsh (TQ 811 696). It is complete and was washed out of a bank a short distance to the north east of the site of Roman burials. Grey ware: horizontal combing all over except for rim and the lowest part of the body; traces of black burnishing. Height: 3 5/8in; rim: 3 1/2in; base: 2 1/4in. Mid first century AD and presumably from a burial of the early post conquest years. (1)
