Full Description
An extensive Roman Burial Ground appears to have been found in the late 1910s, probably during brickearth excavations, in the area centred TQ 828670. It was never reported at the time, and the information filtered down to Gray by workmen offering finds for sale. Most of the items purchased have since been donated to the B.M., but a few retained by Gray include a Samian cup (form 27), an Ivy-leaf dish (form 35), and a dish (form 18), all late 1st C.; also a blue bead. No confirmation of circumstances or exact siting of the find could be gained locally: the principal brickearth workers in this particular area, at that time, were the London and Rochester Trading Company who went out of business some years ago.
