Full Description
Mr Seymour Wakeley has recently revived the pottery-making industry a mile north of Upchurch Church. The clay used is found 2 - 3ft. below the surface of the marsh and the workmen have come upon the remains of Roman kilns and numerous sherds during their excavations. (1) Wakeley got some of his clay from Bayford Marsh so it is possible that these finds were made in the vicinity of TQ 8446 6971 (TQ 86 NW 27). (a) (2) Pottery kiln site(s) and/or saltings at Bayford Marsh, possibly area centred TQ 8446 6971, observed by P. Gray in mid 20th century. P. Gray not now traceable (3). Additional references (4).
