Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1758 to 1798. The mausoleum is situated the the south of the church in the in churchyard of St Peter and St Paul, and was built in about 1778 possibly by John Nash who was Thomas Nash's nephew. The mausoleum comprises a square Portland ashlar monument with a tooled plinth with oval decoration, moulded cornice and vermiculated quoins. It has the inscription "This Mausoleum was begun by Thomas Nash Esq Merchant Citizen of London and one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Counties of Kent and Surrey who died at Paris 7th April 1778 and whose remains are here deposited and finished by his Executors for a burying place for himself and family."

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
FARNINGHAM HIGH STREET 1. 5280 (south-west side Mausoleum of Thomas Nash in churchyard of St Peter and St Paul to south of TQ 5466 10/117 Church II* GV 2. Circa 1778. Square Portland ashlar monument with tooled plinth having oval decora- tion, moulded cornice and vermiculated quoins. Dome with obelisk surmounted by flower. Door with frost work lintel and 2 oval grilles (front and back) with paterae beneath. Inscription "This Mausoleum was begun by Thomas Nash Esq Merchant Citizen of London and one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Counties of Kent and Surrey who died at Paris 7th April 1778 and whose remains are here deposited and finished by his Executors for a burying place for himself and family." Nash's nephew and legatee was John Nash, the architect. Stylistically it is quite possible that John Nash designed the mausoleum. (3)
