Full Description

(TQ 54685782) A coarse, vitreous tile, triangular in shape and ultramine in colour, (not pottery) was found c.1897 on the north bank of the railway cutting south-east of Child's Bridge and "pronounced by the British Museum to be Roman". (1) A sketch plan by the late K. E. Styan, finder of this tile, gives its approximate find-spot as TQ 54685782, a place where "palaeolithic remains" also were found by the late Mr. Abbot and Col. Underwood. Nothing Roman is known to have been found there since and it is possible that it was brought in with the top dressing for the sides of the cutting. Its present whereabouts not ascertained.
