Monument record TQ 86 NW 48 - Tunnel or possible denehole, Rainham, Gillingham

Summary

What was intially thought to be a possible tunnel end was found during excavations for a sewer near Rainham. Further investigations found this to be a roughly semi-circular hole. Loose chalk may indicate this is a denehole or a hole created as the result of bombs known to have been dropped nearby.

Full Description

[TQ 81 65 sited to Rainham only] During recent excavations for a new sewer, the trench from Pump Lane to Twydall Lane, Rainham, cut through what was believed to be the end of a tunnel running northward towards the River Medway. It was found to be a roughly semi-circular hole, 5ft 8inches wide and 3ft 9in high, with a maximum width at the bottom of the excavation, 10ft 4in below ground level. There was some loose chalk on top of this deposit, and it was obvious that the hole was much larger to the north, and was either the top pf the end of a chalk well gallery, or the result of bombs known to have been dropped nearby.
