Summary

Medieval jug thought to have been found at Rainham during the later part of the 19th century. Was presented to the Guildhall Museum in Rochester in 1905 and forms part of the `Walter Collection'. The complete unglazed ovoid jug was made of West Kent grey ware and also had an elaborately decorated broad strap handle.

Full Description

[TQ 81 65 - sited to Rainham only] Jug believed to have been found at Rainham during the later part of the 19th century. It forms part of the `Walter Collection' and was presented to the Guildhall Museum in Rochester in 1905. It is a complete unglazed ovoid jug 19.8cm in height with a rim diameter of 10.6cm and a base diameter of 12.7cm. It is in West Kent grey ware with an elaborately decorated broad strap handle. The jug is medium hard, well-fired, wheel thrown and trimmed off with a knife around the slightly sagging base. (1)
