The barn was surveyed by Archaeology South-East in 2004. The survey report describes the structure as an early 17th century timber framed barn with a clasped-side-purlin roof with half-hipped terminals. A lean-to cattle shelter was originally located to the south of the barn, however, this was demolished by the early 18th century.
Repairs were carried out on the barn during the 18th century and a new three-bay storeyed range was added against the north wall of the building in around 1800 AD. The ground floor may have been used as an animal house (evidenced by the presence of removable rails), and the upper floor was probably used as a granary. In the mid-19th century, a small drying kiln roundel was added to the western end of the north range, and an open-fronted lean-to cattle shelter was attached to the barn's eastern wall. Also during this period, a first floor was added to the northern bay of the barn.
During the Second World War, an incendiary bomb struck the roof of the north range, causing fire damage to the roof of the northern range, and requiring extensive repairs. In the 20th century, the kilns were removed from the building and a plaster ceiling was added. (2)
