Summary

A 13th century midden found near Wallend in 1950. The c.2m by 2m hollow feature contained hundreds of shells of oysters, whelk and cockle, together with bones of ox and sheep and sherds of pottery dated to the 13th century.

Full Description

[TQ 8790 7548] A small medieval kitchen midden seen and finds collected Oct. 1950. (1) A few yards E. of the Roman site [KENT 12 NE 3] "on the eastern bank of the large 'Borrow Pit', I observed a tightly packed bank of shells extending for some 6' and 2.5' from the surface ...... On removing the overlying soil ...... it was seen that a slight hollow 6' x 6' had been filled with many hundreds of shells of oysters, whelk and cockle, together with bones of ox and sheep." Four sherds of a 13th cent. jug were found and date the midden. (2) No further information (3). Additional reference (4).
