Findspot record TQ 87 NE 15 - Two Anglo Saxon Sceattas, Found on the Isle of Grain

Summary

Two early medieval sceattas were found on or near the Isle of Grain 'under an old wall'. The first was an early Anglo Saxon sceattaof the London derived series. The second was a transitional 'Kentish' type silver sceatta dated to c.690-725.

Full Description

[TQ 87 76 Sited to Isle of Grain only] Two Anglo-Saxon sceattas. Both coins stated by the vendor to have been `under an old wall', the first near, and the second on the Isle of Grain. Possibly found by metal detector. (1) (i) Early Anglo Saxon sceatta: London derived series, diademed bust to the right, cup in front. Reverse: king standing with head turned to the right holding a cross in one hand and a bird in the other. Seaby type 370. Found below an old wall near the Isle of Grain. (ii) Transitional `Kentish' type silver sceatta c.690-725. Radiate bust to the right, of good style. TIC before face. Reverse: "standard". type 2a. Found under an old wall on the Isle of Grain.
