EYNSFORD HIGH STREET 1. 5280 (north-west side) Little Mote TQ 5465 12/57 II 2. This house has the remaining part of a large C15 to C16 mansion called Little or Lower Mote which was the principal house in Eynsford and as important as Lullingstone Castle. L-shaped later mediaeval timber-framed building with modern extensions. Two storeys ground floor brick, first floor tile hung with tiled roof. Three casement windows. Gable end has some exposed timber framing. Two storey built out porch supported on 2 Tuscan columns probably removed from another house. External brick chimneystack. Interior has Kingpost roof, C16 stone fireplace with Tudor arch and curved spandrels with carvings showing a tiger looking into a mirror, the rebus of the Sybill family. There are some bannister rails and panelling moved from a house in Richmond. The Sybill family, who lived here at one time intermarried with the Harts of Lullingstone Castle. One owner in the C17, Isobel Wiseman, was a descendant of Sir Thomas More. The house may occupy the site of the earliest hall of Eynsford Castle.
