Summary

Grade II listed building. Main construction periods 1066 to 1908. Four almshouses in West Street founded 1610 by John Southland and rebuilt 1734, now 1-4 Southland Cottages. They are constructed from brown brick on a stone and flint plinth and have two storeys with tiled roofs. They feature a brick modillion cornice, with the bricks inseted diagonally with protruding points. There is a plaque noting John Sothland as the founder and listing later benefactors up to 1908.

[TR 06242475] Southland's Hospital [NAT.] (1) SOUTHLANDS HOSPITAL [NR.] (2) Southland's Hospital - four almshouses in West Street, New Romney, founded in 1610 by John Southland and rebuilt in 1734. (3) These are still in use as Almshouses. See GP AO/63/126/6. (4) 1449 WEST STREET (South West Side) Southlands Hospital Nos 1 to 4 (consec) TR 0624 1/41 28.8.51. II GV 2. A group of Almshouses founded by John Southland and called after him Southland's Hospital. They were founded in 1610 and rebuilt in 1734. 2 storeys brown brick. Tiled roof and brick modillion cornice, the bricks inserted diagonally with the points protruding. The arrangement of the windows is rather unusual. Each house has 1 sash on the ground and 1st floors and there are 2 sashes in all between the ground and 1st floors. The sashes are set in moulded surrounds and both the ground floor and the 2 sashes above have cambered heads. Plain doors with 4 narrow panels running the whole length. Mediaeval stone rubble plinth with flint galleting. Plague: "This hospital being the gift of John Southland. Gent. Anno 1610 was rebuilt at ye charge of Sir Robert Andrew and Sir Henry Furness Bart [date illegible] and was further endowed by Thomas Baker Gent. Anno 1734 and by Richard Rothwell Da Dalglish MRCS Anno 1908".
