Summary

The remains of a suspected pottery kiln were discovered during excavations by workmen in 1939. The finds included thin kiln bricks and a mixture of Roman and medieval sherds, as well as the handle of a large jug. There have been no recorded discoveries since.

Full Description

[TQ 8745 7495] In 1939, while digging a trench, workmen uncovered remains of a pottery kiln in Grain Marshes at 3 - 4 feet above OD. The fragments recovered included thin kiln bricks and a mixture of Roman and medieval sherds, the handle of a large jug among them (1). This site falls within an area of refinery installations. Nothing more is known and there is no record of subsequent finds (2). Additional bibliography (3,4).
