Full Description
Name TQ 8786 7419] Old Salt works [NAT] (1)
Salt-pans. Group of 5 or 6 salt-pans with a windpump shown. (2)
The site is now covered by an oil refinery. (3)
The faint earthwork remains of these post medieval salt pans can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The earthworks consist of narrow banks and a low irregular shaped mound 75m x 53 - although they do not define pans as shown on Hasted's 18th century map. They were situated on the south coast of the Isle of Grain to the west of Horseshoe Point, centred on TQ 8777 7422; the mound at TQ 8806 7404. These features, which were levelled during the building of the post-war BP refinery on Grain, were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (4)
