Full Description

"In the Sharfleet Creek and its branches, I have seen several places about 11ft down where potteries stood, and in one ... opposite the Medway saltings, the great abundance of pottery and refuse points to these having been a larger factory than common. Many blocks of Kentish rag and flanged bricks ... shew the building to have been better than usual. Numerous pots, evidently the stock of the potter, are obtainable by digging ... while broken refuse lies thick and wide. The floor is hard, and lies at present about 18ins below the surface of the mud, and the evidence is complete that there was a kiln here. It is about 11ft below the saltings..." (1) Note based on auth 1. [For kiln sites in Sharfleet Creek see TQ 87 SE 27 and 28]. (2) Various unlocated, possibly destroyed, sites in Sharfleet Creek and its branches. Concentrations of abundant pottery including wasters, kiln debris, and shells were found from the mid 19th century onwards. Probable 1st-2nd century kiln sites in the vicinity. Also evidence of settlement. (3)
