Full Description

[TQ 8603 7064] Roman jewellery found 1864 [NAT] (1) A quantity of molten jewellery, including armillae, a mass of finger rings set with engraved stones, an iron finger ring set with a red carnelian and other fused trinkets, was found in the Slay Hill Saltings by men erecting a sea wall. Except for the iron ring all were of silver or some white metal. It appeared from the charred wood found around them that they had been in a box which had shared the same fate as the building in which it was housed and of which some slight indications were seen (see also TQ 87 SE 17, 22). (2) The rings are late C2. Objects now in the BM (3). Additional bibliography (4,5). Found 1864 by George Payne (Payne's own evidence, see Authority 2, does not support this statement) (6). There is no evidence in the authorities listed for the date given by the OS, neither is there sufficient evidence for distinguishing between the siting given for this hoard and a similar one found about 1864 (qv TQ 87 SE 17) in the same marsh (7). Additional reference from a field report (8).
