Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 1253 MILITARY ROAD
Former School of Infantry TR 1534 NE 1/132 10.4.73
II
2. Built 1807-1808 and designed to strengthen the defences against the expected Napoleonic invasion. The barracks were built behind the Royal Military Canal and the intention was to prevent the enemy from crossing the canal if they made a successful landing on the beach. Listed for historical interest. The building consists of 2 detached barrack buildings of 2 storeys fronted with stucco with hipped slate roofs. 15 cambered sashes with glazing bars intact to each block and 3 simple cambered doorcases with rectangular fanlights to each. The Mess Hall at the Western end of the West block was probably added later in the century. To the rear of these is another range of 2 storeys stock brick with sash windows but in the centre, in the gap left by the 2 front blocks, it is of 3 storeys with a slate roof having pediment with round window and 3 sashes, one of which is 3 lights. The ground floor is of rusticated stucco and has cambered arches with keystones and square columns forming a colonnade.
Listing NGR: TR1556634858

The building was found to have been demolished in the 1970s and so was de-listed in April 2015.

Five wall foundations were discovered during excavation in 2010, prior to the construction of a new supermarket. The walls represented internal partitions within one of the barrack buildings that dated to the early nineteenth-century. (2)
