Full Description
An unusual sherd found with a number of RB sherds on the surface of a mud bank in the vicinity of the three C2 hoards (TQ 87 SE 14, 15, 17) but in a part cut off from the main pottery-bearing area by C19th sea-defences. It comes from the main zone of decoration on the curved body of a jar or beaker of dull red fabric coated with a dark metallic slip. It bears an elaborate moulded plaque or 'medallion' consisting of a group of five figures in high relief and probably represents Venus mourning for Adonis. Probably Romano-Gallic. See AO/58/60/7 (1) and photograph of a decorated pottery sherd (2).
