Listed Building record TR 13 SW 60 - MARTELLO TOWER (NO 19)

Summary

A Georgain in date Martello tower number 19 was built in 1806 as part of the coastal defence system against an invasion from Napoleonic France. The tower is now situated within Hythe Firing Range (Monument Number 1531850). Built of brick it has walls 5.5 feet to 6 feet thick which were originally covered by a cement rendering. It was built around a centre column 5 feet thick and consisted of two storeys with a flat roof as a gun platform. In 1962 a field visit recorded the tower in complete and good condition. By 1997 it was described as partially demolished. Only the northern half of the tower now stands and the remainder, including the roof and thick central column, has collapsed as a result of coastal erosion. The tower was visible before its collapse, on historical aerial photographs.
