Full Description
A Roman burial was found during the summer of 1959 on Burntwick Island (TQ8672-OS 1:10000 1972) by a group of ornithologists. While bird watching they came across a Roman urn embedded in a partly exposed vertical face of the island's edge. In extracting this urn they found a horizontal group of three further intact vessels on the surface nearby were numerous scattered sherds. The urn was a plain grey coarse ware cooking jar of c21" high with a everted rim. It contained a mass of charred bones. The other three vessels were a Samian dish,a Samian flask and a Samian cup. The group undoubtedly represents a cremation burial which may perhaps be dated to the mid first and late second centuries AD. The surface sherds may indicate further burials.
