Two Roman pottery kilns excavated in 1962 by I Jackson. One was of circular updraught type lying 4' below the marsh surface; the scarcity and form of the wasters suggest a short life sometime between the late 1st and early 2nd cent. The other comprised the fragmentary remains of a kiln of rectangular updraught type lying 3' below the marsh surface; the wasters date it to the second half of 1st cent. Sited approximately to TQ 85707019. (1) Roman pots were found hereabouts by Commander Gray in 1930 and fire-bars were found in April 1953. (2) The remains of the circular kiln and its wasters are visible in a sea-eroded bank at TQ 85717018 ('A'); the rectangular kiln site was not found but some 75.0m to the east along the strayway an extensive area of wasters and kiln debris, centred at TQ 85787018 ('B') may represent it.
