Full Description

A bronze coin, probably a follis of Diocletian, found by Gray on Birdcage Marsh, Upchurch. (1) This coin was found during the period 1948-52. It is now in the BM. Gray was a frequent visitor to Birdcage Marsh over the periods 1928-32and 1948-52, and at various times noted Roman bricks and tiles and much Roman pottery including Samian and Terra Nigra. There is nothing to be seen here now, the area, centred at TQ 849 700, having been almost completely eroded away (2) (a). Additional references (3-5).
