The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 5281 CASTLE ROAD (South Side) SANDGATE York Cottage TR 2035 SE 7/65 II GV 2. Probably C18 refronted in Mid Cl9. Sir John Moore's mother is reputed to have stayed. at the cottage while he was in command at Shorncliffe Camp. 2 storeys painted brick. Tiled roof with 3 hipped dormers and eaves cornice. 4 cambered sashes to lst floor, 1 round-headed, one 3-light. The ground floor has a contenporary projection containing 2 cambered sashes, one of which is 3-light, a pedimented doorcase and a right side carriage entrance. Left side round-headed doorcase.
No 2, Sandgate Castle, The Hermitaqe, York Cottage, Gatepiers to The White Lodge form a group with Nos 12 to 16 (even) and Gatepiers to 12 to 16(even). (No 2 and Nos 12 to 16 (even) and gatepiers to Nos l2 to l6 (even) being buildings of local interest.
