Description from record TR 13 SE 50:
Early C15 Wealden house
Historic England archive material: BF039691 67-69 HIGH STREET, HYTHE
Historic building recording and a heritage assessment carried out at No. 69 High Street in 2017 stated that the building was part of a Wealden-type property dating from the late 14th century. No. 69 is described as ‘the hall’ whilst No. 67 represents the rest of the building. 14th century elements identified included exposed timber framing at ground level and evidence for original building fabric within the upper floors. In the attic space, evidence for smoke blackening was visible from when the structure was a later medieval open hall. Wattle and daub panels visible to the rear of the building may also date from early phases of occupation at the site.
Early features also include the yard surface which is described as being “made up of irregular Ragstone cobbles that rises up from the back of the building with a sloping terraced area incorporating massive Ragstone blocks and architectural arch segments at a change of level between the lower and upper yard areas. This continues to rise towards the rear outbuilding before leading toward the passage at the western end of the site which continues to rise up to Dental Street” (from the original report, 2). These elements are highlighted in the report as having particular historic importance.
Repairs and alterations have been carried out at the site across the post-medieval period, with evidence for the building being re-fronted during the 18th century, Regency era features including a staircase with a 19th century handrail, interiors, subdivisions, doors, and mid-19th century updates, including a shop front. Work appears to have continued at the site into the modern period. (2)
