TQ 95 NE NEWNHAM THE STREET (north side)
4/43 Calico House 27.8.52 GV II*
House. C16 and C18. Described as "new" in will of 1617. Timber framed and underbuilt with red brick, with exposed close studding with plaster infill, and painted plastering. Plain tiled roof. Two storeys, the upper floor decorated with calico coloured paintings of scrolled floral designs emerging from vases, in 3 panels across the front, and 1 panel to right return, dated 1710. Hipped roof with gablets and stacks projecting to end right and projecting forward to centre right. Four metal casements on first floor and 3 on ground floor with door of 8 ribbed panels in moulded four centred arched surround in gabled porch - the interior with turned baluster screen. Hipped service wings to rear. Interior: partial survival of screens passage with chamfered arched service door. Newel staircase. Rib and stud doors in moulded door surrounds, wainscotting in parlour with moulded wooden mantel beam, and 2 stone mantel and chimney pieces: downstairs with balustrade pilasters supporting three panels separated by terms, with cornice of animals and flowers and initials S.H. Upstairs mantel of similar arrangement, but with semi-circular heads to panels and lacking carved cornice. Fragmentary wall painting, in imitation of wainscot with religious scenes. Crown post roof. The will of Stephen Hulkes (d.1617) describes Calico as "my new house". It was possibly a public house in 1710, and certainly the Parsonage at a later date. (See BOE KENT II 1983, 403, 405; Hasted, vol.VI; Faversham Papers no. 11, 1976).
