Findspot record TQ 55 NW 37 - Romano-British artefacts

Summary

A quantity of Romano-British pottery and tiles was uncovered in Summer 1972, during gas-pipe trenching on the west bank of the Darent. The finds included examples of samian, Castor and Rhenish wares. An exploratory dig sponsored by the Otford and Distric Archaeological Group took place in October, when further finds of the same type were found; however no evidence of a building was discovered. The material evidence from the excavation would indicate that a quantity of late Romano-British occupation debris was deposited close to the west bank of the River Darent. The datable evidence includes samian wares 140-190 AD. and the 'Castor Box' 180-320 AD. The red ware mortarium rim and the engraved glass bowl fragments are both dated to the middle 4th century AD. The lack of soft Patch Grove pottery and the predominance of the harder greyware pottery would help confirm a later date for the site. The reason for the rubbish being deposited in this area is unknown. Copies of the report together with resistivity results are deposited with the Sevenoaks Library and the Otford and District Historical Society. Finds are deposited in the Group's centre in Sevenoaks.
