Full Description

Description from record TQ 86 SE 8 :
[TQ 89096138] Grove End [NAT] (1) Modern Farmhouse, incorporating remains of a building constructed in 1381; occupied by my brother. Photograph of part of existing farmhouse showing some of the original construction. (2) Grove End is generally regarded as the oldest house in Tunstall. It is not known when it was built, but it was for many generations the home of the Crowmers. Sir James who was the last of the family died in 1613, and after his death, Grove End became a farmhouse. The Manor Court continued to be held there until after 1830. (3) "....Grove End, the habitation of the Cromer's now only a farmhouse, but where the manor court of Tunstall is still kept...." (4) Grove End House. There is evidence that it was a large building of the late timber period, but the whole structure has been renovated and altered to such an extent that only a very small portion of the original part can be seen. A brand new brick front has been built, as well as an entirely new wing of the same material. The interior has been divided by many partitions. The house is now the property of Kent County Council and here experimental farming is carried out in connection with the Farm Institute at Borden. (5) Grove End Farm is as described by Igglesden. GP/AO/63/120/3. (6) (TQ 890961389) Grove End Farm [NAT] (7) Grove End (formerly listed as Grove End Farmhouse) Bredgar Road, Tunstall. Grade II. 16th, 17th and 19th century house. Timber framed, exposed with plaster infill, part underbuilt with painted brick, the rear (south) front clad 18th century with red brick, with plain tiled roof. (8) Grove End Farmhouse, not mentioned in Buildings of England. (9)
