Findspot record TQ 93 SW 13 - Late Neolithic axe, Appledore

Summary

A very fine polished axe, of mottled grey-brown flint was found c. 1978, while farming. It was found close to one of the dykes in the Appledore area. It seems probable that it had been dredged from the bottom of a dyke during cleaning operations when the removed silts were redeposited over nearby fields. The axe is 19cm long and 8.5cm at its widest point and is in perfect condition. The butt is tapered almost to a point, while the broad cutting edge is slightly chamfered. There is no sign of wear though the sides appear to be slightly flattened. The general type is late-Neolithic though the shape is less usual.
