Full Description
TQ 940307. A very fine polished axe, of mottled grey-brown flint (seeillus) was found by Stewart Orpin, c. 1978, while farming. He found it close to one of the dykes in the Appledore area. It seems probablythat it had been dredged from the bottom of a dyke during cleaning operations when the silt removed is sometimes spread along nearby fields. The axe is 19cm long and 8.5cm at its widest point and is in perfect condition. The butt is tapered almost to a point, while the broad cutting edge is slightly chamfered. There is no sign of wear though the sides appear to be slightly flattened. The general type isLate-Neolithic though the shape is less usual. Mr Orpin retains the axe. (1)
