Full Description
[TQ 974457] Two Belgic cremation burial groups were found at Hothfield Common near Ashford, during the digging of drainage sumps by military authorities, in August and October 1942. Further excavations were carried out by Lt. Brinson of the B.P. Mobile Arch. Unit. One group consisted of two beakers and two urns, one containing a cremation (see Illus). The other group consisted of two urns, one containing a cremation and a drinking cup. Much damage had been caused by the excavators and by root action. Some flint flakes and iron slag were found on the site. [Sited from quoted map reference: O.S. 1 in. to the mile Military Edition 413642, sheet 126] (1). The given siting falls within a roadside strip of wooded commonland where the sites of former buildings are evident. Col. Owen Tudor, owner since 1945 of "The Ashes" an adjacent property, was unaware of the finds, but confirmed that the area was occupied by nissen huts and that his house was a Battalion Headquarters during the last war. The present location of the finds has not been ascertained (2). TQ 975457. Two La Tene III cremation graves.
