Monument record TQ 94 NE 7 - Early medieval burial, Westwell downs

Summary

An early medieval burial was found in 1858 at Westwell one mile north of the aggregates terminal at Parsonage Wood, on the slope of a hill rising to Westwell Downs. Found at the site were two amber fluted glass cups, or squat jars, in a bronze bowl deposited in a grave cut. The squat jars were last known to be in the possesion of Maidstone Museum and the bowl was given to the Kent Archaeological Society.

Full Description

On exhibition in Maidstone Museum are two amber fluted squat jars found in a bronze bowl in a grave at Westwell 1858, on landbelonging to Miss Chapman. The bowl, which was given to the KAS, Acc.No. 640, was in a fragmentary state and its remains are not now recognisable. Miss Chapman's holdings are in Westwell are too extensive to enable a close siting to be made. (d) (1) TQ 990474 Anglo-Saxon inhumation burial sited one mile north of Rothfield Station on the slope of a hill rising to Westwell Downs. Two fluted amber glass cups (2) or squat jars, (5) found in 1858 in a bronze bowl in a grave at Westwell are in Maidstone Museum. Accessionnumbers 237A & 640. (2-5)
