Summary

A crouched Bronze Age burial and a late Bronze Age pot were found in January 1935 near to the Pilgrims Way at Dencher Wood. It is uncertain exactly what happened to this discovery but it is thought that a bucket urn 'from Charing', on exhibition in Maidstone Museum, might be the missing pot.

Full Description

[TQ 9693 4902] A crouched burial and a Late Bronze Age pot found in January 1935 (1). The above siting falls within a disused part of a chalkpit owned since 1955 by Messrs. Waters & Cooper. The foreman, unaware of the find or of any further finds since, stated that the pit had passed through many hands over the years, and he did not remember the name of the owners in 1935. No further information was obtainable at Maidstone Museum, but Mr. D.B. Kelly, Asst. Curator, thought that a bucket urn 'from Charing', on exhibition in the Museum, might be the 'pot' in question (2).
