Full Description
[TQ 97974894] Tumulus, probably BA, on chalk escarpment (OD 620) at Frittenfield, N. of Westwell. A trench was cut about 7 feet deep through the tumulus from N to S by Mr. Dombrain 25.3.1925. Nothing was found (1) (H.J. Elgar) The ground is under wheat stubble and nothing remains at the point indicated, a prominent position on Westwell Downs, slightly below and to the SW of the highest point of a hill. The landowner, Mr. Stewart Smith (a), took over the farm in 1962 and could offer no further information. The former owner now lives abroad. Dr. Scott, of Dunn Street, who has known the district intimately for many years, stated that no mound has existed at this spot for over 25 years. Both Dombrain and Elgar died some years ago (2).
