Full Description

Description from record TR 06 SW 62:
Boughton Field Oast, Macknade Farm, Faversham. (Sited to TR02316024 from OS 1:2500 1962)Grade II. This four square kiln oast built in 1898 is currently being converted into a house. Originally all four kilns were heated using coal fires, but in the early 1900s a `Sirocco' burner was installed at the rear of the two left-hand kilns and warm air forced into the kiln from below the traditional wooden slatted floor covered with a horse hair mat. By contrast the two right-hand kilns were converted initially to coke-burning `Cockle' stoves and later to oil burners. The drying floors were of the roller hair cloth type.
