Monument record TQ 94 NE 12 - Westwell beacon, Burnt House
Summary
A beacon at Burnt House near Westwell is shown on William Lambarde's 'Carde' of c.1570 showing 52 beacons in Kent: these beacons dropped out of use after 1640. The beacon at Fairlight, Sussex (centred TQ 8612) could only have been seen from Westwell in very clear weather. Beacon Wood, commanding extensive views to the south and west, is shown on the Tithe Map at TQ 967493. No remains of this structure are now visible on the ground.
