Monument record TQ 94 SE 8 - Site of Romano-British burials, Potters Corner

Summary

A Roman burial was discovered in 1929 during works to widen the Ashford-Maidstone-London road. Thought to be a cremation burial this find included a small whitish urn, another small urn, an inkpot, a cup of Samian ware and eighteen gold coins or discs. It has also been suggested that this burial may have formed part of a larger assemblage of old pots which were tipped down the bank near where it was found, from an adjacent house called 'Woodside'. This however seems unlikely as the pots were found unbroken along with a heap of burnt bones.

Full Description

(TQ 99134474) Roman Burials March 1929 (1)

A Roman burial was discovered in the spring of 1929 in widening the south side of the Ashford-Maidstone-London road at Potter's Corner; the furniture included a whitish urn, 15-18 inches high, a small urn, an inkpot and a cup of Samian ware and eighteen gold coins or discs. (2)

A burial group found at Potters Corner, almost certainly represents anuntouched cremated deposit, but it is suggested that it formed part ofa quantity of old pots etc. which were tipped down the bank near whereit was found, from an adjacent house called 'Woodside'. But the pots were found unbroken, and against a patera which had tilted was found a heap of burnt bones. The terra sigillata found in the deposit consisted of a Dragendorff 33 and an 'inkpot' c.150 AD or earlier. (3)

The siting by authority 1 is now covered by a widening and straightening of the main Maidstone-Ashford road. (4)
