Summary

The remains of a cremation burial deposit were found near Westhawk Farm in 1970. Amongst the finds were the base and lower sides of a course ware pot and pieces of a similar but smaller pot, remains of a small green glass vessel of the middle to late 1st century AD. Also found at the site were pottery sherds dating from the 13th to 14th century and fragments of cremated bone from an adult, although the date of deposition was uncertain. Further geophysical surveying and trial trenching in advance of a housing development revealed evidence of an extensive Romano-British road side settlement at the crossing of two Roman roads.
