Full Description
Description from record TQ 96 SW 4:
[TQ 9489 6190] Malthouse Cottages [NAT] (1)
Malthouse is a conspicuous residence perched upon a slight eminence along a road leading out of Greenstreet. Its blackened timbers have twisted out of the perpendicular in places and the gabled porch, the feature of the house, is slightly lop-sided. Modern windows have replaced the old, but two of the original remain and there is a fine Tudor doorway. The owner is Mr Potter Oyler. (2)
"Malthouse" - nameplate. The upper storey of this half timbered private residence is jettied out along the whole of the west and southsides. The north side has been rebuilt with modern brick, but early brick appears in the east face. There is a fine group of early brick chimneys placed centrally. The hipped gabled roof is red tiled. The house is in very good condition. 15th century with 16th/17th century alterations. GP/AO/59/197/6 from N.W.: 197/7 from S.W. (3)
Malthouse [NR] (4)
Malthouse: revisited and still as described above. (5)
The Malthouse, Grade II*, Lynsted Lane (east side). Late 16th century.(For full description see list.) (6)
The Malthouse may be as late as 1643 by its symmetry, with central porch and chimneystack, and by the S-braces arranged in patterns. (7)
The house may be of 15th century date, originally a hall house, with a floor inserted in the early 16th century and one bay at the western end removed c1580. Additions also constructed at this time include a central brick chimney, a porch, a rear access stair and a rear range. (8)
Little in the structure to suggest use as a maltings but name of field to N of house may suggest the former presence of an adjacent maltings (8)
Historical report on the development of the house. (12)
