Full Description
Mr Alured Faunce de Laune informs me that human skeletons, accompanied by iron spear-heads, have been recently found along the south side of the road in Chapman's Gravel Pit at Newnham. These were doubtless Anglo-Saxon interments. (1) Chapman's Pit: this is the one [centred TQ 9718 5917] so called, according to information from a workman in a gravel pit higher up the valley. (2) This gravel pit has been filled in and the ground levelled off. (3) Human skeletons, spearhead, etc. ... probably Anglo-Saxon, found before 1893 in Chapman's Gravel Pit, Norton. The site is possibly the old pit, actually in Ospringe parish on the other side of the road, ona slope below the 200ft. contour. (4)
