Full Description

[TR 9919 5831] Roman burial found in 1921. (1) In November 1920, a group of pottery was brought to light at Kennaways, in the angle formed by the two roads leading to Throwley and Stalisfield respectively. The three pieces rescued unbroken from the gravel pit in which they were found were an Urn or Olla, containing calcined bones, a one-handled flagon and a bulbous beaker. A fourth vessel, said to be of red ware, about the size of a breakfast cup, with a lid to it, was smashed by falling stones. A fragment of dark grey ware also came from the site. (2) The pots found in an isolated burial at Kennaways were dated about A.D. 300. Seven years after the group was published, a coin of Licinius from the same spot came into the possession of the writer. (3) A third brass of Licinius (No. 67) found 1920 about the same time as three pots (see Authority 2) but not linked up with the pottery till seven years later. The donor vouches for its provenance and it constitutes an excellent confirmation of the date of this isolated burial. (4) [TQ 9920 5831] Roman burial found A.D. 1921 [R] (5) The gravel pit, centred at TQ 9918 5831, is filled in and the ground levelled up. (6)
